Student Program and Participation Opportunities

Student contributors can apply for financial support thanks to XSEDE, the San Diego Supercomputer Center, the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI), Google and Micron Foundation, and through the fundraising efforts of STEM-Trek and Virginia Tech!
 
To receive travel support for the PEARC17 Student Program, students are required to participate in all student activities, including the volunteer program.

Submit your student poster by the extended May 8 deadline, then APPLY HERE for financial support by Thursday, May 25. You will know if your submission has been accepted by Tuesday, May 23.

PEARC17 will offer a dynamic student program and diversity efforts, bringing together researchers, students, and prospective users from under-represented groups and new disciplines. PEARC17 provides students with a range of opportunities in the Technical Program and in targeted student activities.

 

For all student attendees, PEARC17 will include a one-day intensive collaborative modeling and analysis challenge; a session on careers in modeling and large data analytics; a mentorship program; and opportunities for students to volunteer to assist with conference activities. Participation from traditionally under-represented communities including women, minorities, and people with disabilities, is strongly encouraged.

Student Modeling Day

During Modeling Day, students will work in teams to build a model of a scientific phenomenon to understand its behavior and simulate a range of conditions. Teams will be challenged to understand the underlying model and the simplifications it makes concerning the real system. They will write and test the computer codes that are needed to solve the problem, add additional sophistication to the models, improve the user interface to the code, and validate the code against real data or more sophisticated models.

 

Students prepare for Modeling Day with targeted PEARC17 tutorials on Monday, and the primary modeling activity happens all day Tuesday. Students have a chance to attend Technical Program sessions on Wednesday. On Thursday, the teams present their results in a session open to all PEARC17 attendees.

Student Papers and Posters

Student papers and posters are a great opportunity to meet others both in and out of your field during the PEARC17 program and a chance to discuss your work in greater detail with conference attendees and exhibitors. Student posters should present new results or promising work in progress, ideally aligned with topics encouraged in the Technical Program and/or aligned with the conference theme.

 

To qualify, the work must be primarily the student's, the student must be the primary author, and the student must present the poster. Papers and posters should refer to the advanced research computing resources used in the work. See the Technical Program call for participation for submission details and deadlines; be sure to indicate that the primary author is a student on your submission.

Student-Mentor Program

To help foster the next generation of scientists and science leaders, the PEARC17 Student-Mentor program helps students build confidence and navigate towards success. Whether you’re an undecided undergraduate or a well-seasoned graduate student, you can get the most out of the PEARC17 experience through the Student-Mentor program. As a student mentee, you will have the opportunity to interact one-on-one with a PEARC17 attendee-mentor from industry, academia, or national laboratory.

 

PEARC17 will host a student-mentor dinner Monday evening and a lunch on Wednesday. Explore your interests and ask your most pressing questions. Looking for a job or internship? Not sure about graduate school? Wondering how to find research opportunities? Struggling with your studies? Just wondering what sessions to attend at PEARC17? Mentors are there to help answer your questions and share their experiences!

Speed Networking

The Speed Networking session will allow students to meet one-on-one with representatives from the PEARC17 exhibitors and to share their enthusiasm for advanced computing, visualization, data analysis, and research. In this round robin-style event, students move around to the exhibitors’ tables and meet them in two-minute rounds. Bring your resume and your “personal elevator pitch” – we want you to make a good impression!

Student Volunteers

The Student Volunteer Program is a great way to get a behind the scenes look at conference activities and network with other students who are passionate about advanced research computing. As a student volunteer, you will have an all-access pass to the conference program and tutorials.  By helping to support the conference, you will have a unique opportunity to meet and learn from leading researchers, professionals, and educators. Students with a passion for leadership and service are encouraged to apply this exclusive opportunity!

 

Students must be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program during the 2016-2017 school year to apply.
