Call for Participation - PEARC19 Conference
 

You are invited to prepare presentation proposals for the PEARC19 Conference that will be held in Chicago, July 28 - August 1, 2019. 

 

Presentations may address any topic related to advanced research computing, but topics consistent with one or more of the following four technical tracks are of particular interest. Proposals may take several forms as indicated below. NOTE: Sections highlighted in blue below reflect deadline extensions and other updates.

 

Technical Tracks for PEARC19

 

  1. Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence: Practice and experience related to the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence to advance science, engineering, medicine, manufacturing, scholarship, public services, the arts, etc. Examples of relevant topics: development of algorithms and software for machine learning, neural nets, deep learning, and artificial intelligence; applications of such algorithms and software; design or use of special purpose hardware or software designed to enable such applications in the context of advanced research computing facilities.
     

  2. Advanced Research Computing Software and Applications: Practice and experience relating to the use of advanced research computing to advance science, engineering, medicine, manufacturing, scholarship, public services, the arts, etc., by developing and leveraging advanced hardware, software, tools, networks, and services. Examples of relevant topics: development and implementation of computational methods and software to enable application of advanced research computing to any field of research or scholarship; analysis and understanding of research data using statistics, databases, visualization, virtual reality, etc.; science gateways; description of novel results or breakthroughs achieved in any field of research or scholarship for which the use of advanced research computing was essential.
     

  3. Facilitation of Advanced Research Computing: Practice and experience in facilitating the acquisition, operation, and use of advanced hardware, software, networks and services to securely and sustainably advance research in science, engineering, medicine, manufacturing, scholarship, public services, the arts, etc. Examples of relevant topics: funding and operating of advanced research computing facilities, systems procurement, systems administration, cybersecurity, support for researchers and other end users, building and sustaining partnerships among providers of advanced research computing, cost-effective use of cloud and shared HPC resources.
     

  4. Workforce Development and Diversity: Practice and experience in developing and sustaining a highly proficient workforce for advanced research computing that realizes the full potential of people in all demographic groups. Examples of relevant topics: Training in advanced research computing; Curriculum development for STEM, computer science, data science, and computational sciences; learning technologies; work with underserved communities, career and workplace experience optimization.


 

Proposal Types for PEARC19

 

Except as noted below, proposals will be reviewed based solely on extended abstracts (generally 2-4 pages describing thee work to be presented, possibly including specific information relevant to certain types of presentations). Submitters are expected to include sufficient information in their extended abstracts to permit reviewers to judge the appropriateness and quality of submissions. Unless noted specifically below, there are no particular format requirements for extended abstracts. For technical papers and panels, the Technical Program Committee will make the final assignment of accepted proposals to one of the four parallel technical tracks, but submitters will have an opportunity to indicate their preferred tracks.

 

All proposals must be submitted to https://ssl.linklings.net/conferences/pearc by the dates indicated below. Submissions for each type of proposal will open approximately one month prior to the indicated deadline.

 

  • Technical Papers: Accepted technical papers will be included in the proceedings and presented orally in parallel track sessions (25 minutes for presentation including Q&A). Except for student technical papers, the deadline for submissions in the form of extended abstracts (2-4 pages) has been extended to February 20, 2019  at 11:59 PM Anywhere on Earth (originally due February 13, 2019). Authors of proposals selected as finalists will be invited to submit full manuscripts (5-8 pages using the ACM sigconf template) by April 10, 2019 for final review and selection. Technical paper proposals that are not accepted for oral presentation at PEARC19 will automatically be considered as poster presentations without further action by the submitters.

 

Student papers (which must have a student lead author and a student presenter, if accepted) submission deadline has been extended to March 20, 2019 (originally due March 13, 2019). Student submissions must include a letter of intent, including the title and author list, submitted via this form. Submissions due date for full manuscripts (5-8 pages using the ACM sigconf template) has been extended to April 15, 2019 (originally due by April 3, 2019 and initially extended to April 10, 2019).  If you have any questions about student papers and posters, please contact us at pearc19-posters@googlegroups.com

 

  • Poster Presentations: Accepted posters will be presented in a poster session at PEARC19, and extended abstracts will be included in the proceedings. The maximum presentation space for posters is 3.5 ft (1.1 m) wide by 4 ft (1.2 m) tall. Proposals should be extended abstracts (2-4 pages) that describe the work to be presented. Proposers are also encouraged to include a preliminary mockup of the poster presentation. (Mockups are not expected for proposals that have been converted from proposals for technical papers.) Submissions due date (for all) has been extended to May 1, 2019 (originally due by April 24, 2019.)

Student Posters: To qualify as a student poster, the primary author must be a student, and the work must be primarily theirs. At least one student author of an accepted student poster must attend the conference to present the work. Submission due date, including optional extended abstract (2-4 pages using the ACM sigconf template), has been extended to May 1, 2019  (originally due by April 24, 2019).

 

  • Panels: Panel sessions may be either 90 (preferred) or 60 minutes in length and will be scheduled concurrently with or as part of parallel track sessions. Proposals should be extended abstracts (2-4 pages) that discuss the proposed topic, list the names of the organizer(s) and panelists, and describe the specific contributions of each organizer or panelist. For panels that are similar to those presented previously by the same or similar organizer(s), the proposal should identify the venues of recent offerings and differentiate the PEARC19 proposal from prior offerings. The deadline for submissions has been extended to Wednesday, March 20, 2019 (originally due March 13, 2019).

 

  • Birds of a Feather Sessions: BoF sessions will be one hour in length, and will be scheduled at the conclusion of the afternoon programs on Tuesday and Wednesday. Proposals should be extended abstracts (2-4 pages) that discuss the proposed topic, list the names of the organizer(s) and panelists/presenters (if any), and describe the specific contributions of each organizer or panelist/presenter. For BoF sessions that have been presented previously by the same or similar organizer(s), the extended abstracts should identify the venues of recent offerings and differentiate the PEARC19 proposals from prior offerings. Submissions should indicate whether audio-visual equipment is required. The deadline for  submissions has been extended to Wednesday, May 8, 2019 (originally due May 1, 2019).

  • Visualization Showcase: PEARC19 will include a visualization showcase session in which visualizations and visualization-associated research projects will be presented. Proposals should be extended abstracts (2-4 pages) that describe the visualization and, as appropriate, the data, the computational application that generated the data, and any special or novel visualization techniques, tools, or software developed or used. Additionally, for ongoing visualization-associated research projects, the goals, progress, and findings to date should be described.  Interactive visualization submissions are also encouraged, and abstracts should describe demonstration requirements.   Submissions should provide a link to a (possibly preliminary) version of the visual content to be presented, in a form ready for viewing, downloading or running by reviewers. The conference will provide a 55-inch monitor for display, or space for an interactive visualization, but submitters should not assume the availability of special computing or networking capability. All visualizations will be loaded on a conference computer (preferably using a USB drive) for presentation in the showcase. For accepted submissions, submitters will have the option of including the extended abstract and visualization in the conference proceedings. Submission deadlines, including links to preliminary presentations, have been extended to May 8, 2019 (originally due April 24, 2019 and initially extended to May 1, 2019. ).

  • Tutorials: Tutorials provide participants with in-depth training in the use, facilitation, or operation of research computing and data resources and services. Tutorials should emphasize hands-on, practical content over lecture content and specify their target audience as Introductory, Intermediate, or Advanced in the proposed topic. Tutorial sessions will be scheduled in 1.5 hour blocks with morning and afternoon breaks and lunch provided by the conference. Tutorials may be proposed for full-day (four blocks), three-quarter day (three blocks, with limited availability), or half-day (two blocks). Tutorial submissions must include a detailed description of the tutorial, its format, proportion of hands-on activities, goals, expected attendance, relevance to PEARC19 attendees, and any special requirements for room setup, networking, AV, etc. A list of proposed instructors and their roles must also be provided, along with a list of recent offerings of similar tutorials by the same or similar organizers. Detailed proposals deadline has been extended to February 27, 2019 (originally due on February 20, 2019).

 

  • Workshops: Workshops provide a focused, in-depth venue for presentations, discussion, and interaction. Proposals will be selected with a preference for submissions that inspire deep and interactive dialogue on important topics within the research computing and data communities. Workshop sessions will be scheduled in 1.5 hour blocks with morning and afternoon breaks and lunch provided by the conference. Workshops may be proposed for full-day (four blocks), three-quarter day (three blocks, with limited availability), or half-day (two blocks). Workshop proposals must include a detailed description of the workshop, its format, goals, expected attendance, relevance to PEARC19 attendees, and any special requirements for room setup, networking, AV, etc. If known, a list of proposed speakers and their roles should be provided, along with a list of recent offerings of similar workshops by the same or similar organizers. Detailed proposals deadline has been extended to February 27, 2019 (originally due on February 20, 2019).

 

  • Special Events: As a venue that brings together representatives from across a wide range of communities, PEARC19 welcomes external groups and programs that want to host events and meetings during the conference. Short meetings may be accommodated during lunches or breaks in the Technical Program. Proposals should identify the hosting group and a primary point of contact for logistical questions, describe the purpose of the meeting (and whether it is open or closed to general attendees), and explain its alignment with the PEARC19 conference goals. In addition, proposals should estimate the anticipated number of attendees and provide information about the preferred scheduling and any special room requirements. Groups taking advantage of this opportunity are expected to have their attendees register for the conference and reserve hotel rooms through the hotel block. Costs for extra food or specialized room setups (including AV) will be borne by the group. NOTE: Special Events requiring significant space or time, or of significant importance to PEARC19 attendees should submit proposals by the Priority Deadline, March 6, 2019 for highest consideration. Low priority proposals, due by June 5, 2019, will be accommodated as time and space allow.

Student Program

 

PEARC19 will offer a dynamic student program designed to bring together a broad and a diverse group of researchers, students, and prospective users including significant participation from under-represented groups and new disciplines. The student program will provide students with a range of opportunities to participate in both student activities and the full technical program so that they may share their research efforts and gain insights and inspiration from like-minded individuals at the conference. Student submissions are strongly encouraged by the Technical Program Committee. All student submissions should follow the general submission instructions above and clearly indicate their relevance to advanced research computing. In addition, student technical papers and posters have the following additional qualification requirements:

 

  • Student Technical Papers: To qualify as a student technical paper, a student must be the primary author, and the work must be primarily theirs. At least one student author of an accepted student paper must attend the conference to present the work orally in one of the parallel track sessions.

 

  • Student Posters: To qualify as a student poster, the primary author must be a student, and the work must be primarily theirs. At least one student author of an accepted student poster must attend the conference to present the work.
